Spring 2008 Update

Spring is coming and great golf weather is on the way! The club has many exciting new tournaments and activities planned for 2008 that will offer a variety of both fun and serious events for everyone.

We will continue hosting our 'Major' annual events that have become permanent fixtures on our event calendar including the club champoinships, member-guest days, member-member, Ryder Cup team events and much more. In addition, we have added new events this year, including an evening Wing Ding and cookout to be held monthly beginning in April. We will also host the PGA McGladrey Team Championship on May 10. This team event is similar to the Oldsmobile Scramble, with winners advancing to a state event in Pinehurst with lots of prizes at both the local and state levels.

The club will be hosting the Women's NAIA Region XII Regional golf championship on April 21-23. Montreat College is the host school and their coach was so impressed with the club on a visit last fall that he asked us to stage the event. Thirty players from six schools will play three rounds of eighteen holes each. Play will be in the afternoon so the club will be open for TMGA, TWGA and regular play each of those mornings. This is quite an honor to be selected as the site for this event.

If you haven't joined the TMWA, TMGA or the weekend Dogfight Associations, don't delay as each group begins seasonal play this month. As an added incentive, Sports members are now eligible to join these groups and participate in weekly events.

Tryon Country Club local rules

Rules of Play - 2007 USGA Rules govern play except as amended by the following local rules:

Preferred Lies -  Preferred lies are in effect as follows: a ball may be lifted, cleaned and placed within one clublength of where it originally lay, not nearer the hole in your own fairway only.

Embedded Ball - The embedded ball rule is in effect “through the green” Rule 25-2.

Course Markings
Out of Bounds- Defined by White stakes and Country Club road and Horseshoe Curve road.
Yellow stakes and lines – water hazard
Red stakes and lines – Lateral water hazard
White lines and signage define ground under repair and any landscaped areas where relief is permitted.
White-lined areas tying into artificially-surfaced roads or paths are deemed to have the same status as roads and paths. They are obstructions, not ground under repair.

Misc. – Ditches to the left of holes #1 and #2 are played as “Through the Green” with no relief permitted without penalty.

Stones in Bunkers – Stones in bunkers are deemed to be moveable obstructions and may be removed.

Electronic Measuring Devices – Electronic measuring devices are permitted for use during competition rounds unless they include functions that gauge other factors than distance (wind speed and gradient).

Relief allowed – Relief is peremitted from areas of “ground under repair” including fire ant hills and French drains.

Score cards – In a competition a “score card is deemed to be returned when posted on the scoreboard”.
